at long last

Filed under: it's ok to cry, music, discourse — admin @ 10:26 pm

i’ve finally sat down to do another episode.  my apologies for the long wait.  this episode was done completely with ‘real, vinyl’ records, what with the recent movement to having a solely digital music collection.  do your kids a favor and leave them some keepsakes instead of a harddrive.  nobody likes a harddrive.

the best of 2007

Filed under: it's ok to cry, music, discourse — admin @ 1:48 pm

with 15 days left in the year, it felt safe to do a best of 2007 show with josh . we had a few drinks while doing this so try to ignore the lack of production value and concentrate on the fact that there’s a lot of awesome music.
happy new year, everyone.

it’s ok to cry 10.21

Filed under: it's ok to cry, music, discourse — admin @ 2:23 am

once again, kiddos… it’s that time.

…time for another brilliant edition of the best non-radio-radio show on the internet. it’s ok to cry™®.

it’s not really trademarked, and the copyrights don’t belong to me all that much, but what are ya gonna do?

i’m trying a new method now, adding an in-site player, so let me know if you prefer it or hate it or what not. it has customizable colours. that’s cute.

so here’s the latest episode. i really hope you like it, and i really hope you tell some people about it. seriously.

if you want to download it, here: download me!

spread the word, join my fanclub.

it’s ok to cry comeback

Filed under: it's ok to cry, music, discourse — admin @ 12:29 am

hello again kids-

i’ve finally gotten around to recording my ‘comeback’ edition of it’s ok to cry. it’s a bit sloppy around the edges, but if i sit around and try to do takes until it’s perfect, i’ll end up never doing the show again. i’m trying to keep the ‘live’ nature of the show by doing everything in one take—no editing the audio after… no overdubbing vocals… etc. i must apologize for the bit of distortion, but that was actually to do with the audio program i was using, and not the actual recording. the original recording is just too quiet, so i sacrificed some audio quality for some volume. it’ll be getting better and better, and i’m already excited about the next episode.

so please, sit down, kick a leg up, and listen to the newest episode of it’s ok to cry

i’d love to hear your opinions. email me at plx@thegunsel.com or leave a comment. thanks!

an autobiographical compilation

Filed under: compilation, discourse — admin @ 11:01 pm

my good friend josh dropped the idea a few weeks back of a compilation that consisted of a song per year of your life that corresponded to that year. this turned out to be very very difficult, so the idea became a little more loose—a compilation of songs that are tied to memory and turning points in your life. i thought that this would be a good thing to start off the site with.

what i have assembled is 30 songs (15 per ‘disc’) that were major on my journey from zygote to zachary as you know him now. in each zipped file are 15 songs and a set of liner notes that describe the reason for each song’s presence in rtf format (which should be readable in any word processor or web-browser. try the ‘import’ feature in your word processor if it doesn’t work at first.). the notes are really half of it, so do take a look at them instead of just pilfering free music. i hope some of you get inspired to follow suit. if you do, drop me a line. plx@thegunsel.com

and as i’m sure this might spark some discussion, there are already amendments and absences in the list i have thought of. joanna newsom (omitted because i feel that the portion of my life connected with her music is somewhat covered by others), some songs from more recent memory (omitted because i want to really pare this down to things with ’staying’ power), and especially the last few years of my listening have been somewhat ignored because of the extreme variety.

and as a final note, i didn’t try to make this the ‘best’ of my tastes, but rather the most honest… so if you think i’m uncool after this, you wouldn’t be far off. the first cd i bought was a tribute to garfield.

a couple episodes of ‘it’s ok to cry’ are coming up. a special session with josh will be posted once it has been mixed down, and i’ll be recording the comeback show in the next few days.

welcome

Filed under: discourse — admin @ 4:02 pm

welcome to the future home of the gunsel. this site is a many-faceted beast. primarily, this site will be a continuation of the wslc radio show ‘it’s ok to cry’ in a podcast format, with higher quality production and archives. secondly, this will prove as a home to my other musical projects. thirdly, well… i suppose we’ll have to wait and see.
