my good friend josh dropped the idea a few weeks back of a compilation that consisted of a song per year of your life that corresponded to that year. this turned out to be very very difficult, so the idea became a little more loose—a compilation of songs that are tied to memory and turning points in your life. i thought that this would be a good thing to start off the site with.
what i have assembled is 30 songs (15 per ‘disc’) that were major on my journey from zygote to zachary as you know him now. in each zipped file are 15 songs and a set of liner notes that describe the reason for each song’s presence in rtf format (which should be readable in any word processor or web-browser. try the ‘import’ feature in your word processor if it doesn’t work at first.). the notes are really half of it, so do take a look at them instead of just pilfering free music. i hope some of you get inspired to follow suit. if you do, drop me a line. plx@thegunsel.com
and as i’m sure this might spark some discussion, there are already amendments and absences in the list i have thought of. joanna newsom (omitted because i feel that the portion of my life connected with her music is somewhat covered by others), some songs from more recent memory (omitted because i want to really pare this down to things with ’staying’ power), and especially the last few years of my listening have been somewhat ignored because of the extreme variety.
and as a final note, i didn’t try to make this the ‘best’ of my tastes, but rather the most honest… so if you think i’m uncool after this, you wouldn’t be far off. the first cd i bought was a tribute to garfield.
